Indiana State Police Ticketing Changes
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Areas, General, Government, News
Not sure if this is valid or not, but figured I’d share it with my readers until I hear otherwise. Better safe than sorry.
Indiana State Police & new ticketing policy
Indiana State Police are going to start cracking down on speeders. Their new slogan is “Lower Speeds, Less Crashes, Save Lives”.Per their Superintendent they are going to start issuing citations for :
- 6 Miles over the speed limit
- Failure to Yield
- Improper Lane Movement (which includes not signaling 300 feet before you change lanes if traveling over 50 mph or not signaling at all)
- Following too Close (this is $160.00 ticket by itself!!!!)
- Passing an Officer
Just an FYI. This is information that a relative of a friend was given at his post meeting yesterday. He already saw another one of his co-workers pull a guy over this morning for merging onto the interstate and then pulling right into the center lane without properly signaling. They’re going to start cracking down. They want to have the same reputation as the Ohio State Police.
Can anyone out there confirm this? Let us know in the comments.

1When was this posted? I was given a ticket for following too closely. However, I am completely innocent. I wasn’t speeding, my only crime was that I was behind a cop. When I asked the officer what the law was regarding following too closely he told me something completely incorrect. I am not from Indiana and have a real problem pleading guilty when I am innocent but I can’t find an attorney that will help me and it really isn’t worth my time (or potential for another bogus ticket) for me to return to Indanapolis to defend myself. I used to appreciate police officers but this blantant abuse of authority has made me think twice.

2I was travelling through Indianapolis on my way to Ohio, and was the victim of a speed trap. Ihad my cruise control set at 75 in a 70 m.p.h. zone, and as soon as I entered the 65 m.p.h. zone, I was pulled over. The officer wa very rude about the whole situation, mocking me when I explained that I didn’t have time to slow down.

3The driving laws are clear, if you fail to obey them you should pay the price. I think that the laws are fair and it is up to law enforcement to make sure they are not broken. I drive the speed limit, and never speed. 5 mph over the posted speed is speeding Patrick . People need to realize that if you speed you’re going to get a ticket. SLOW DOWN IT’S THE LAW!

4I agree Russell, but I also speed. If I get pulled over and I was speeding, I accept the ticket. No questions. I do believe speed limits could be increased in certain areas though. However, there’s the result that regardless of what the speed limit is, loads of drivers will then go their normal 5-10 over the speed limit.

5Passing an officer is a violation? Huh? Wow, leave it to the great state of Indiana to save the world from themselves. “Less” crashes? Help! How soon can I move away from Indiana? Not soon enough.

7Today I reseved a ticket for 5.3 miles over the speed limit. The speed was not the officers issue. It was because I passed him. I know I was over the 65 mph speed limit. But in order to pull me over officer Pornteb L. Nathalang chose to cut off the car bettween out lane. 121 dollar ticket

9Indiana State Police write 102 speeding tickets for each tail-gating ticket that they write. In Clark County in 2006, tail-gating tickets went down by 41% from the previous year and car collisions went up by 34% over the previous year.
Three ISP officers have told me that ISP does have a quota for their officers. Speed is the easiest ticket to write and to prosecute. They do not write tickets for tail-gating and lane swerving…only speed. Drive just north of L’ville on I-65 and see what I mean. An ISP officer will watch hundreds of tail-gaters go by in order to stop that one speeder!!! They tell me to pull over for someone tail-gating me and to slow down if someone swerves right in front of me without signaling!!!! This is not protecting the public. It is telling me to run out the back door of my home when someone is breaking in the front door!!! ISP does not operate in the public interest!!! ISP officers believe very sincerely that they are above the law!!!!

10When did cops become the bad guys??? When did people start to think that cops just like to be “mean”? When did cops start arguing with people because they can? This is ridiculous and you people need to stop complaining. The law is set for a reason. If you pass an officer while exceeding the speed limit it is a blatant disrespect and needs addressed. Should every car ignore the laws even in the presence of an officer, they would have no authority. If one car passes, they all do. It is only illegal to pass an officer if you are speeding. DUH! What did you expect… really? If an officer is pulled over on the side of road with their lights on, you must move over. Another violation people seem to complain about however, this violation KILLS OFFICERS. Following too close is one of the major causes of fender benders. These “fender-benders” cause highways to be jammed up and call for traffic control with the fire department, police and even EMS personnel. Stop tailgating. It can be prevented. Start acting like adults and take responsibility for your actions. Frankly, these citations can be prevented. Any “quota” in place is merely to make sure officers don’t get lazy. An officer who constantly drives by violations and does not correct the action is not doing his/her job and that also needs addressed.
People support law enforcement until they break the law. These are the people who feel they are above the law.

11Great points Brooke. My dad was an officer in a really small town and I was amazed at my friends that would get mad at him on a Friday night for pulling them over for speeding or running stop signs. You know, doing his job.

12Some of the police operating in Clark County Indiana behave like hypocrits, including state police. They pretty much speed everywhere I see them, both on and off duty (family in car). They make turns on red - both right and left. They park in fire lanes at the grocery and at restaurants. They place great emphasis on interstate speeding, yet what are they doing to address the pervasive running of red lights, which I argue is much more deadly than exceeding interstate limits. If an officer wants the respect due his office, elevating him above others in position and prestige, he should earn it through his actions. Officers should take their lead from religious leaders - living what they preach… people learn from and emulate what they see their leaders do.

13Patrick And Others.
Get a life! You just admitted you were doing 75mph in a 70mph zone, then, the speed drop to 65mph and you’re still doing 75mph. WHATS THE PROMLEM?? You got caught, pay your ticket, fines and court cost and lawyer fee’s and get over it!!! Are you stupid or what! The ISP are doing their JOB. Don’t speed in INDIANA. Stay in OHIO. Oh! one more thing. Make sure you show up for court. I would hate that a warrant would go out for your arrest and you get pulled over again for speeding, and a warrant pops up and you go to jail, over a speeding ticket. Then you’ll need a lawyer.
Watch your speed. We are!

14For travelers and organizations at least the solution seems clear. Take your business elsewhere. I’ll be hosting my organization’s conference in Chicago instead of Indianapolis this year thanks to my experience with these new policies that enhance revenue rather than safety.

15No offense, but I passed an Indiana State Trooper on US 31 north of Indy a few weeks ago. I was in a 55 MPH zone, doing 55 when I passed him. He pulled me over and gave me a ticket for “Contrary to the form of the: 9-21-5-2 Speeding - Maximum Speed Limits”, Vehicle Speed: n/a, Prima Facie Speed: n/a”, the ticket does not say what the posted speed limit was, it does not say the speed I was traveling, the ticket does not say how many miles per hour over the posted speed limit I was operating my vehicle. What’s up with that? You bet I’m going to court.

16Anthony:
That sounds like such a bogus ticket. I would take it to court also. It still sucks that you have to take a day off of work and spend a few hours at court. I wish there was more recourse to get cops like that in trouble for writing bogus tickets.

17Is everyone ready to stick together and fight this police state oppression ? First lets start with the superintentant of the Indiana state police. Has anyone else seen police speeding without there sirens on ? Has anyone seen a number# on a police car so as to identify the speedy officer speeding ? I’ve seen them swerve around “two-by-fours”, bricks”, huge rocks, and plywood. They drive around it like it’s not there problem, but guess what , it’”IS” there problem.
If they are pushing safety so hard, let’s push back. Let’s make sure they clear the roads of debrie, making the roads safe for all. And mark there individual car with a number so as to id them for wrong doing ! Petition in hand, but need signatures, many of them.
And a good attorney !
Someone said that radar detectors are illegal to use in Indiana, can anyone confirm this Nazi act of oppression ?
