Annual WZPL Make A Wish Request-a-thon Shoots for $200K
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Business, Charities, Local Media, Special Events, Volunteers, WZPL 99.5
I don’t listen to 99.5 WZPL as much as I used to but I always appreciated their Annual Make A Wish request-a-thon. It’s probably because back about the time they started doing it I was a volunteer for the Make A Wish organization here in Indianapolis and had an interest in other businesses that were also assisting with the efforts of the MAW organization.
We’ve set our most ambitious goal ever this year — $200,000 in 36-hours! Our friends and longtime Make A Wish supporters at Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, UAW/GM, Panera Bread, and eTapestry have made significant pledges. But, your help is what makes the difference! Are you ready to share the power of a wish?
Every dollar counts towards the goal. Take a few minutes to collect money around the office, school, or with your friends and donate as a group. You can join the Wishmakers Club to spread a larger donation over the whole year. And, of course, you can make a wacky request with your donation of $25 or more (we receive thousands of requests and will play as many as we can, it’s a lot of fun to play your requests but the Request-a-thon is more about helping children and their families get through a difficult time).
Take a moment tomorrow and for the rest of the week to switch on over to 99.5 and here the stories of some of the children and volunteers that have been rewarded by their involvement with this great organization. Oh, and why not call up and have them play your favorite song that doesn’t make the airwaves much anymore.

Rob Bell Speaking at the Murat
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Cultural Events, Downtown, Murat Theatre, Seminars, Special Events, Things To Do in Indy
Christian author and speaker, Rob Bell, will be speaking at the Murat on November 30 at 8:00pm. I was first introduced to Rob Bell through my brother talking about his book “Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith”.
After that our life group at church focused on a few of his NOOMA video series for our discussion starters. I thought these were very powerful videos to watch and did a great job of inspiring thought and discussion into our group.
He’s now touring with his “the gods aren’t angry tour“, which is making it’s stop in Indianapolis this Friday.
Part anthropology, part history, part deconstruction - this is new material that Rob hasn’t taught before, exploring how humans invented religion to make themselves feel better.Part anthropology, part history, part deconstruction - this is new material that Rob hasn’t taught before, exploring how humans invented religion to make themselves feel better.
Regretfully I won’t be able to attend as we’ll be celebrating my son’s birthday that evening. If you do attend, I’d love to hear your thoughts about what he shared.

Led Zeppelin in Concert
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Concerts, Cultural Events, Special Events, Things To Do in Indy
I’ve received a couple of these types of e-mail notices now about re-living concerts by watching them on a large movie screen.
I haven’t really decided how I feel about something like this. The idea of watching a concert on DVD seems odd to me in general. I guess I’m getting over it a little bit because I have watched a Harry Connick, Jr. concert on DVD as well as Collective Soul’s “Home” DVD.
The difference with each of those examples though is I was doing other things while the DVD was playing. I wasn’t sitting in a theater watching the event occur again.
Has anyone out there experienced this? Was it worth it? I’m really interested in hearing about your experience.

Dave Ramsey "Total Money Makeover LIVE!" Event Today
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Business, Business Entrepreneurs, Pepsi Coliseum, Special Events, Volunteers
I’ll be participating in “The Total Money Makeover LIVE!” event today at the Pepsi Coliseum. I’m actually volunteering, so if you’re attending you may see me helping you find our seat or selling you a book.
I’ve been a reader of Dave Ramsey’s books since I was in college. Sadly, I’m still working on applying everything I’ve learned to my life. However, the lessons and understanding I’ve gained in all of those years are and have made their impact already.
My goal is that we’ll be out of debt (except for our house) within the next 3 years. If we could get “gazelle intense” as Dave would say, we could probably reduce that to under 2 years.
What about you? What are you financial goals and aspirations? Have you heard of Dave? Do you even consider living a debt-free life a possibility?

Experience "Beowulf" in IMAX Splendor
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Cultural Events, Greenwood, IMAX Theater, Movies, South Side, Special Events
I loved the story of Beowulf when I was a student in high school. I always liked stories surrounding myths. I’m not sure how I feel about the new movie adaptation though. I’m sure it will be good, I just kind of wish it was a live-action film and not CGI.
When I first heard about it I thought it as going to be produced like “300″, which I loved.
Regardless, I’m sure THE way to experience the movie is in IMAX full-screen at Kerasotes 16 on the south side of Indianapolis. Not sure if I’ve got enough friends to worry about seeing it at a group rate, but good idea nonetheless.
Are you going to go see the movie? What do you think?

Get Your Speed Fix at the Indiana State Museum
Author: Jason Bean, Category: Cultural Events, Indiana State Museum, Special Events, Things To Do in Indy
There’s a new exhibit and event taking place at the Indiana State Museum from now until January 21, 2008. It’s called “Speed”.
SPEED takes you on a high-velocity plunge into horizon-stretching, barrier-smashing motion!
Let yourself be inspired by stores of people in the worlds of sports and entertainment who push the envelope of acceleration. Hands-on activities will transport you to the limits of SPEED. Design your own roller coaster or race car, test your reaction time and stop a virtual train. Compete against friends and find out just how fast is too fast! Learn more about push!, stop!, go!, drag!, and zoom! at this fun, hands-on exhibition.
Events like this remind me of how I wish there was a VisitIndy pass of some kind that you could purchase that would get you in the vast majority of all venues in the city and surrounding areas. My family has a Indianapolis Children’s Museum and Indianapolis Zoo membership. Being able to pay a little bit more and get access to Conner Prairie, NCAA Hall of Champions, Indiana State Museum and discounts at local sporting events would be a great buy in my opinion.
