The Souls of Our Feet at Pike Performance Arts Center

souls-of-our-feet

On Saturday, January 19th it was a frigid day to be outside, but it was also a good night to be at the Pike Performing Arts Center with my daughter. You see, we went on a Daddy Daughter Date to go see "The Souls of Our Feet: A Celebration of American Tap Dance".

My daughter has taken some dance classes, including tap, to introduce her to the art and she got exposed to the true art of dance that night.

"The Souls of Our Feet" is part of a National Endowment for the Arts "American Masterpiece: Dance" production for the 2007-2008 season. The dance group is Tapestry Dance Company (Jaqueline Coleman, Katelyn Harris, Jason Janas, Brenna Kuhn, Tasha Lawson, Tony Merriwether and Matt Shields), Executive-Artistic Director is Acia Gray and special guest was Dianne Walker who was a cast member of the great tap movie entitled "TAP" with Gregory Hines.

The production was great. They would start off with a video projection of a specific scene from history that highlighted the roots of tap dance in performance. Then the jazz trio would start playing the music and the video scene would fade as the live dancers stepped into the light and began doing the routine that was introduced in the video segment. The transition and fading from recorded audio and projected video to live sound and dancers was a tremendous expression.

I found a YouTube video of clips of various segments from the performance as it was done in an opening performance back in November. The clips are almost identical to what we got to see live at Pike PAC.

What a great show.

Free Shawn Mullins Coming to Music Mill

I’m not sure exactly what it was about the song "Lullaby" released by Shawn Mullins back in 1998, but I absolutely loved it. It could have been that I was living in Nashville, TN at the time and there’s a little bit of a line about the city in the lyrics.

Shawn Mullins will be in concert at Music Mill up on the north side tomorrow night night.

The Atlanta native, who dipped into the pop charts with 1998’s "Lullaby" and earned a teen following by placing his "Shimmer" on the "Dawson’s Creek" soundtrack, has a very good train song of his own on his upcoming disc, "honeydew." Titled "See That Train," it seems to take Mullins on a trip into early Tom Waits territory. And it proves to be a journey worth taking.

Give yourself a great start to the weekend and take advantage of this free concert at Music Mill. Also performing, opening up the show is Jenn Cristy.

U2 3D in IMAX Glory!

U23D-IMAX-concert

I may have just experienced one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on a screen. Through the generosity of BestBuy.com RewardZone I was able to score a couple of passes to a sneak preview of U23D movie at the IMAX Theater at White River State Park.

I wasn’t sure at all what to expect. I’ve seen advertisements before about going to watch a music concert at a theater and I just didn’t think it would be something worthwhile. Seeing one in 3D seemed even weirder.

All I can say is…WOW! You are immersed in the experience of being a part of this concert that took place in Argentina. The stadium concert experience that was part of their "Vertigo" tour is simply inspiring.

I can’t even think of much more to say about it that does it justice, but you feel like you’re member of the audience as well as being right on stage with the performers themselves. The only suggestion I’d have was that the IMAX theater should have been cranking the volume another 50 decibels. I’ve watched movies that were pumping more audio and this U23D experience screamed for more volume!

UPDATE: The widget originally embedded in the page was messing up the layout and repeating itself. Visit the U2 3D Movie website for all the details.

UPDATE AGAIN: Ticket prices at the IMAX at Indiana State Museum is $13.50 for adults. Tickets at the Kerasotes 16 IMAX on the south side is only $12.50.

Is Dungy Done?

tony_dungy This is not happy news to even hint at but we’re all waiting to hear from Tony Dungy on Monday if he’ll be back for another season with the team. Irsay has already announced that upon his decision to leave, assistant coach Jim Cardwell will become head coach on Dungy’s departure.

We were talking this past week about the possibility of Dungy retiring from the Colts again. I can understand his desire to move on and focus on other things. The thoughts we all shared though was that his position as head coach of an NFL team that’s doing very well affords him the ability to make even more changes in the community for the good don’t you think?

I don’t think it bodes well that his kids have already enrolled in schools in the Tampa area. I’ll bet he could walk right back in the door of the Bucs and get a head coaching job back.

Sad day. Sad, sad day.

Harlem Globetrotters at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday

michael-wildthing-wilson-globetrotter

This could be a challenge this weekend. I’m taking my daughter to Pike PAC for "The Souls of Our Feet" as a daddy/daughter date. However, I just realized that the Harlem Globetrotters are going to be at Conseco Fieldhouse this weekend, Saturday at 2:00pm.

My son would love this and now I need to debate on whether or not I can swing taking my son to this on Saturday afternoon and my daughter to the other event on Saturday night.

If you’ve ever been to a Harlem Globetrotters game you know it’s a great time and very funny. My son would love it!

Decisions, decisions… can I afford the tickets?

Are You A Computer Teacher in Indiana?

iceindiana

A friend of mine is an a technology teacher on the south side in Center Grove. He let me know about a conference coming up next week for computer educators in Indiana. The organization is called Indiana Computer Educators and their annual conference starts next week in downtown Indianapolis. The conference will be held in the Indiana Convention Center, Exhibit Hall D.

Here’s a little more about the organization:

Indiana Computer Educators (ICE) is a non-profit professional group whose mission is assisting educators to enhance learning through the use of technology. David Flowers of the Fort Wayne Community School Corporation founded this organization in 1980. In 1980, ICE was a user group of forty-three people that had an interest in computers, met two or three times each year, and published a newsletter. The first ICE Conference included six hardware vendors.

I was heading into the teaching profession at one time, high school biology teacher was my goal. That changed quickly once in college and I started taking all the educational theory classes. Now what’s odd is I’m very interested in all the theory now. Hmmm….

Colts Give Titans Cakewalk into Playoffs

TN-Titans-poster I got to go to the last regular season game in the RCA Dome last night and it was a good time. The seats were great, very front row of the upper deck.

The problem with the game is they didn’t play to win. When Harrison walked out in regular clothes I knew Peyton wasn’t going to be in the game for long. I just didn’t realize how little he was going to play. They pulled him early in the 2nd quarter along with the rest of the starting offense.

I understand resting your players to prepare for the play-offs, but my opinion is you don’t let yourself lose to a division opponent, especially the Titans! People are going to feel pretty bad if we meet them in the playoffs and they beat us. We deserve to lose if they do though.

Final Regular Season Game in the RCA Dome

colts-sea-of-blue

Last week my son and I got to enjoy the Colts vs. Texans home game. My wife purchased the tickets as a birthday gift for my son and they were great! While we were at the game they were making announcements about this week’s game being the last regular season game in the RCA Dome.

I was thinking then that it would be great to be able to get tickets for the game and be able to be there for the last home game in the dome. At the time I didn’t think about it too much because of the unlikelihood of me actually getting tickets.

Indianapolis Gets Another Marathon in May

indy-mini-marathon

Indianapolis gets another event that I won’t be participating in anytime soon. An article in the IBJ says that organizers of a new mini-marathon for the city are adding it to the calendar because of the existing mini-marathon already being sold-out at 35,000 spectators.

I’ve got a number of friends that have run in the marathon and are hard-core runners I guess. I’m sure they’ll be extremely happy.

I believe this is a good move for the city. There should be more events that encourage physical exercise. I personally wish there were more cycling events in the city and opportunities to do them.

Of course there’s still the challenge of me getting my butt off the seat and actually going out and doing it. When I was in college and single, I’d bike about 80 miles a week. During my short stint working at Lowe’s on the south side I’d bike the 4 miles to work every day.

Good times. Good times.
