Pan American Plaza by Polina Osherov

pan-am-plaza-lucas-rca-dome

Polina Osherov is a local photographer here in Indianapolis and she recently shared this photo with me that she took of the Pan American Plaza area downtown. I just thought this was a great photo showing some of the history of sports in this city.

From the Pan Am Plaza that was built for the Pan American Games that the city hosted in 1987.

You can see the RCA Dome, home of the Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts that was built in 1984 at a cost of $82 million.

Then in the background to the south you’ve got the soon to be opened Lucas Oil Stadium, the new home of the Indianapolis Colts and the home of the 2012 Super Bowl!

Is Dungy Done?

tony_dungy This is not happy news to even hint at but we’re all waiting to hear from Tony Dungy on Monday if he’ll be back for another season with the team. Irsay has already announced that upon his decision to leave, assistant coach Jim Cardwell will become head coach on Dungy’s departure.

We were talking this past week about the possibility of Dungy retiring from the Colts again. I can understand his desire to move on and focus on other things. The thoughts we all shared though was that his position as head coach of an NFL team that’s doing very well affords him the ability to make even more changes in the community for the good don’t you think?

I don’t think it bodes well that his kids have already enrolled in schools in the Tampa area. I’ll bet he could walk right back in the door of the Bucs and get a head coaching job back.

Sad day. Sad, sad day.

Colts Give Titans Cakewalk into Playoffs

TN-Titans-poster I got to go to the last regular season game in the RCA Dome last night and it was a good time. The seats were great, very front row of the upper deck.

The problem with the game is they didn’t play to win. When Harrison walked out in regular clothes I knew Peyton wasn’t going to be in the game for long. I just didn’t realize how little he was going to play. They pulled him early in the 2nd quarter along with the rest of the starting offense.

I understand resting your players to prepare for the play-offs, but my opinion is you don’t let yourself lose to a division opponent, especially the Titans! People are going to feel pretty bad if we meet them in the playoffs and they beat us. We deserve to lose if they do though.

Final Regular Season Game in the RCA Dome

colts-sea-of-blue

Last week my son and I got to enjoy the Colts vs. Texans home game. My wife purchased the tickets as a birthday gift for my son and they were great! While we were at the game they were making announcements about this week’s game being the last regular season game in the RCA Dome.

I was thinking then that it would be great to be able to get tickets for the game and be able to be there for the last home game in the dome. At the time I didn’t think about it too much because of the unlikelihood of me actually getting tickets.

A Birthday Gift of the Colts

My son’s 8th birthday was a few days ago and he’s become a total sports nut in the past year. He scored a LaDainian Tomlinson and Bob Sanders jersey along with some other sports related items.

More importantly my wife and sister-in-law were able to score him two tickets to the Colts vs. Texans game on Sunday, December 23rd. I’ve been to a couple of Colts games and my wife has never been. I was encouraging her to go with him but she said it should be a father/son outing.

The other challenge is that we’re both involved in a Christmas production later that evening. I’m hoping I won’t have any issues getting back to the car and down to the southside by 6pm that night.

Colts Play Hard But Fall to Brady and the Patriots

A disappointing loss tonight for the Colts against the Patriots. They played them well the entire game and gave them a lot of firsts this season:

  • First game they didn’t score first
  • First game they didn’t score on opening drive
  • First game they were ever behind this season

Regretfully they just couldn’t give them their first loss. Things looked good for three quarters for back-to-back touchdowns put the Patriots up by four with 3 minutes left in the game.

I wouldn’t want any other quarterback in the league in charge of my offense than Peyton Manning in that situation. Sadly, this time it just wasn’t enough.

I think there should be a lot said for the Colts. The defense really stepped up and aside from the final two touchdowns by Brady, shut down the most powerful offense in the league. Joseph Addai was a 1st down machine in the game, bringing out comments from the commentators about his similarities to Barry Sanders (interestingly enough the Detroit Lions scored 44 points today. I don’t think they scored that much all of last season).

What’s amazing is this game was only really important when it comes down to the playoffs and a tie between us and the Patriots. The way the two teams are playing it’s pretty apparent they will be seeing each other again in that situation. With this win it looks like we’ll be playing them in New England.

It’s BLUE Thursday

superbowl-trophy In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year. It’s NFL kick-off time and the reigning world champions are none other than the Indianapolis Colts.

Today is officially Blue Thursday and there’s lots of events on the schedule today. Of course there’s the NFL kick-off concert and party that will be at Monument Circle downtown. The festivities start off with the group Hinder at 5:15pm, the inaugural American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson at 6:00pm and country music singer Faith Hill at 7:00pm.

For you Colts fans, if you haven’t heard, St. Vincent Children’s Hospital is now called Peyton Manning’s Children Hospital at St. Vincent. That name change was announced yesterday, I’m sure the NFL will probably pick-up on that bit of news during tonight’s game.

Indiana native John Cougar Mellencamp will be performing in the RCA Dome before the game as well and Keyshia Cole will be singing the National Anthem.

If you’re not into the Colts but want to do something downtown, you can join a group of protesters in Pan Am Plaza complaining about the Indiana property tax situation.

If you’re not into any of that stuff, you might be interested in Big Brother 8, it’s eviction night tonight!

Superbowl Matchup Rematch

The Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears are playing each other tonight on Monday Night Football. It’s not really Monday Night Football in my opinion, but anytime to watch the Colts play is a good game.

They’re currently not winning, but that’s okay with me. I think the pre-season is to let people play that you’re really wanting to see what they can do. It’s also an opportunity to probably try some match-ups for people that you wouldn’t risk in the regular season.

The score is 27-17 Chicago, so not the score you’d like to see, but I’m seeing some good plays by people I don’t know. I’m seeing some good catches and runs from people, as well as some great defensive, hard-hitting tackles.

Although the 3rd string quarterback, Betts, will more than likely not see much game time, he’s looking good. He’s only problem is he appears to be forcing some passes and he’s had 2 interceptions just in the 4th quarter that I’ve seen. I’m not sure if he’s pushing it to try to make a name for himself or if he’s really not seeing the coverage and making bad passes.

4:14 left in the game and I’m getting tired. They’re interviewing Dwight Freeney now about his recent contract, highest paid defensive player in the NFL history.

Good for him. I’m looking forward to seeing him plant some QB’s this year. Just as long as it’s not against my fantasy league players.

Superbowl Champion Colts Play Tonight and Faith Hill Headlines with Kelly Clarkson

faith-hill

I’m excited! The Colts play the Dallas Cowboys tonight in a pre-season game and the game is going to be televised on Fox 59 at 8:00pm.

The sad news is that there are a number of players that will or may not be playing due to injuries:

  1. Robert Mathis
  2. Bob Sanders
  3. Rocky Boiman
  4. Anthony “Booger” McFarland (for the season?)
  5. Noland Burchette
  6. Brannon Condren
  7. Ben Ishola
  8. Charlie Johnson
  9. Tom Johnson
  10. Kenton Keith
  11. Keith O’Neil
  12. Bo Schobel
  13. Clint Session

On another note, Faith Hill has been selected to be the star attraction at the NFL Season Kick-Off Party on September 9th in Indianapolis on the Circle. Also performing will be American Idol’s first winner, Kelly Clarkson. Indiana hometowner, John Cougar Mellencamp, will be performing at the RCA Dome before the game.
