Klus Memories of the Indianapolis Air Show
Author: Jason Bean, Category: East Side, Local Residents, Outdoor Recreation, Special Events, Things To Do in Indy
Robert Klus shares his memories of attending the Indianapolis Air Show with his family.
I too attended the Indy air show with my family and had a wonderful time. It was a hot day, but we were able to see a fantastic air show and a Vietnam simulation with the aircraft of that era that was incredible. To top it off, we went on a Huey (helicopter ride) at the end of the day. It took us over the reservoir and the beautiful Indiana corn fields. What an amazing experience! I hope to do something similar this year. It has been a couple of years since we last attend, so we are looking forward to it.
Hopefully you’ll get to experience another Huey helicopter ride again this year and see how the landscape has changed since last time. I’d love to do that as well sometime.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Robert!

1The Indy Air Show was wonderful. The whole family was able to go. My brother and his son volunteered to work with a hot air balloonist and the cost to ride in the balloon was reduced. He said that working to fill the balloon was hard work but fun. Riding in the balloon was thrilling and many left on the ground want their turn next year. Since the younger children could not go it gives them something special to look forward to. We will try to arrange for each child to ride as they reach the age to ride.
Did the children enjoy the air show? Well the fact that they sat in their chairs from the time we got there until time to go home. The “WOW! Did you see that” “COOL” and other remarks say it all. Everyone is looking forward to attending next year’s show and many shows for years to come.
I was unaware that the air show is one of the largest fundraisers for Riley Children’s Hospital. This is another reason for us to buy tickets. Our family owes a large THANKS to Riley Hospital and the doctors who worked diligently, over 30 years ago, to save the life of my nephew. He was not expected to live more than 24 hours when taken to Riley as a baby. By the end of those 24 hours an exploratory surgery was performed and he was expected to live a normal life. 30 years later, he was able to give a small speech before the show began about his memories and the white horse proving he is alive and well because of Riley Children’s Hospital.
